The optometrist at O’Fallon Family Eyecare is available 24/7 for eye care emergencies. During business hours we always make time in our schedule to work in patients with urgent eye care needs.
Generally, an emergency is defined as an injury or condition that has presented rapidly and recently, and usually causes significant pain or sudden loss of vision.
We are available to treat any of the following on an urgent care basis.
- Scratched eyes or other injuries
- Eye pain or light sensitivity
- Sudden loss of vision
- Sudden onset of double vision
- Red eyes
- Recent onset of floaters or flashing lights
- Foreign bodies (getting small particles in the eye)

Don’t Go To The Emergency Room or Urgent Care!
The best and quickest way to get relief for your urgent eye care needs such as red eyes, scratches or minor injuries is to see an eye doctor right away. The trouble with ERs and Urgent Care centers is that they don’t have eye doctors readily available. They are staffed with general physicians who don’t specialize in eye care.
Another couple of reasons not to go to the ER or Urgent care are cost and speed of care. Seeking care from the Emergency room will be considerably more expensive than getting care directly from a local eye doctor such as Dr. Hegyi. Also there are long waiting times as they triage and see patients with more serious conditions.
The only time we recommend going to the ER first is when you have a severe injury that will require advanced imaging such as X-rays or will need surgical intervention. Otherwise, our staff is qualified to treat the vast majority of eye emergencies.
